JHC Social Club Guest Speaker Sue Hampel OAM, Co-President, Jewish Holocaust Centre, will give a lecture on “From Romania to Poland  - and to Rwanda: a Reflective Journey of the child of a Holocaust Survivor”.

Sue Hampel was a high school teacher at Mount Scopus Memorial College in Australia for over 30 years. She is currently working at Monash University as an academic mentor to indigenous students and a teaching associate in Modern Jewish History, Holocaust and Post Conflict studies. Sue holds a Masters degree in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. She has led numerous groups of students and adults to Poland and Rwanda.

Special Screening of Academy Award-winning Director Eva Orner’s documentary: CHASING ASYLUM.

The screening, which will be proceeded by an introduction from barrister and Chasing Asylum executive producer, Steven Castan, who will participate in a Q & A session after, with Martin Appleby, former Trainer Security Officer at the Manus Island Detention Centre and whistle-blower.

The right to seek asylum arose from the ashes of the Holocaust as part of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Event Details

The Jewish Holocaust Centre Film Club will be screening “The Restless Conscience: Resistance to Hitler Within Germany 1933-1945” (1992) 113 mins, USA. Directed by Hava Kohav Beller.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A session with Guest Speaker: Dr Adam Brown, Senior Lecturer In Media, Communication And Public Relations, Deakin University.

In 1944, at least 170 German citizens were brought to trial and convicted as participants in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This was not an isolated act, but rather the last of more than 20 attempts to overthrow the Nazi Regime.

Special Screening of “Ever Grateful: Anonymous Rescue during the Holocaust”.

Six Holocaust survivors express their gratitude to strangers whose acts of kindness saved their lives. For this they are ever grateful.

Following the screening ethicist Dr Leslie Cannold will speak about ‘Gratitude, Empathy and Courage’.
